Neurodivergent Relationship Communication
Your partner or close relationships are strained because of communication differences
Steps
- Learn your communication style: do you need processing time? Do you think out loud? Do you go nonverbal under stress?
- Share your 'user manual' with your partner: 'When I'm overwhelmed, I need space — it's not about you'
- Establish a signal for when you need a conversation pause (a word, a hand gesture, a timeout card)
- Schedule regular check-ins rather than relying on spontaneous emotional conversations
- Use written communication for complex or emotional topics if verbal processing is difficult
What you need
A willing partner, openness to different communication styles
Why it works
Neurodivergent communication differences (delayed processing, literal interpretation, overwhelm-induced shutdowns) are frequently misread as disinterest or hostility. Explicit agreements about communication style prevent the misunderstanding cycle.
Real-world example
A couple where one partner has ADHD and the other has autism were having daily arguments. They started texting each other about household tasks instead of verbal reminders, and scheduled a weekly 'state of the union' chat. Arguments dropped by about 80% within a month.
Troubleshooting
- If your partner takes your need for space personally, couples counselling with a neurodivergent-aware therapist can help
- Texting important things to each other — even when you're in the same house — is a perfectly valid strategy
- Remember: different doesn't mean deficient. Your communication style has strengths too
